Reportedly, Netflix Wants To Buy Its Own Movie Theaters

Netflix's continued movement into various segments of the entertainment industry has become a massive topic of conversation over the course of the last few years as the streaming giant has continuously upended the traditional theater experience. That said, it now looks like Netflix is actually looking to get in on the theatrical experience, rather than completely disrupt it. In fact, it looks like Netflix may be on the verge of getting its hands on a theater chain of its own.

A new development has occurred in the continuously evolving dynamic between Netflix and the traditional theater distribution model. Per The Los Angeles Times, it looks like Netflix may have considered buying theaters of its own in Los Angeles and New York as a means of screening its feature and documentary content that might not typically get airtime at major theater chains. Netflix apparently considered purchasing the Landmark theater chain owned by Mark Cuban at one point, but backed out over the steep price. Nevertheless, the decision to buy a theater chain to screen its content remains an idea that's very much on Netflix's radar.

As far as prestige is concerned, some definite advantages could result from a Netflix-owned theater chain. The topic of Netflix movies becoming worthy of awards recognition has turned into a major conversation in the entertainment industry, with names as big as Ready Player One director Steven Spielberg saying that Netflix movies aren't Oscar-worthy. A significant factor in that discussion has been the fact that Netflix movies don't always get a theater exhibition. By buying a chain of its very own, Netflix would have the ability to start screening its own content on big screens in select cities to make a much more cogent argument for awards consideration.

Moreover, the war between Netflix and the Cannes Film Festival recently heated up when it was announced that the festival would only allow theatrically-screened movies to compete. Getting its hands on easy theater exhibition would open up a natural pathway to these prestigious events, and that exposure could translate to more prestigious movie content moving forward -- not unlike what happened when Netflix's TV content like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black started taking off.

The ever-increasing scope of Netflix's properties and projects also arguably makes the jump to theater exhibition a logical decision. Netflix jumped into the big-budget world last year with the release of David Ayer's Bright, and that film's wide exposure to audiences seems to suggest there's more blockbuster content on the way, as well. With a big screen naturally acting as a perfect fit for films on a bigger scale, the movie to theaters could help Netflix become an even bigger player in the popcorn movie genre.

Of course, at this stage of the game, no deal has been finalized yet. The rumors of Netflix considering a theater purchase remain just rumors, but we will bring you more information related to all of these rumors as it becomes available to us. For now, make sure to take a glance at CinemaBlend's Netflix premiere guide and our full movie premiere guide to see what films are on the horizon in 2018!

Matthew McConaughey Went To Extreme Lengths To Keep Track Of His Serenity Character's Storyline

Matthew McConaughey Went To Extreme Lengths To Keep Track Of His Serenity Character's Storyline

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for the movie Serenity. If you have not yet seen the film, please continue on at your own risk!

Matthew McConaughey characters have experienced many different kinds of twists over the years, but weve never seen the actor play out anything like what goes down in Serenity. At first the protagonist, Baker Dill, is shown to be a simple fisherman caught up in a noir-esque murder plot, but as the story unfolds he winds up discovering that he is actually fictional and living in a video game. Its a pretty crazy development, but according to writer/director Steven Knight, it was one that McConaughey went the extra mile for in his approach. Said the filmmaker in a recent interview,

I had to have the extra layer, particularly for Baker Dill, [so it was a discussion with] Matthew, because he had to calibrate his character through the impossible business of beginning to question your own reality. It's a fantastic thing - he got this massive sheet of paper and he charted the progress of his character on it with arrows and comments. The thing was just like a visual depiction of a character's unraveling. So he always knew. Obviously we're not shooting in sequence, so you always knew where he was at in terms of 'Am I real, or am I not?' It was an absolutely amazing feat.

When I had the chance to hop on the phone with Steven Knight earlier this month, I took the opportunity to dive into spoiler territory and discuss the development of Serenitys big twist. Part of that discussion included his relationship with Matthew McConaughey through the navigation, and it was in his response that I learned about the actors special inside guide to the mind of Baker Dill. While its not exactly clear what it looked like, apparently the guy went as far as to create a special map of his characters mind.

Those who have seen Serenity know that the whole experience doesnt make for an easy reality shift for Baker Dill, as he certainly has a slight understanding that things are a bit off from the start, but is ultimately pretty blown away by the totality of the truth. Because of this arc, each scene required an understanding of the characters particular mindset at a particular point in time, but clearly this was a challenge that Matthew McConaughey was more than prepared to take on.

Speaking on a larger level about the implementation of the twist in Serenity, Steven Knight offered that part of his thinking for the film was that he wanted to upend the conventional approach to the narrative device specifically in terms of setup. While he understood that he had to give the audience at least a slight inkling that things werent quite what they seemed, he also wasnt terribly interested in an overuse of foreshadowing and laid groundwork. Instead, he wanted the development to feel like it came out of left field, as he explained:

I think a lot of time in storytelling a surprise is set up so that it isn't a surprise. And genuine surprise is difficult because it's not part of conventional way of doing things. So there's a lot of resistance to the idea that you genuinely have a surprise that comes from nowhere. You do have a few [hints], but I tried to do that as little as possible, and it's not what people would normally do.

This approach interestingly makes Serenity a bit different than most twist-centric features, in that its not the kind of movie where you go back to see it a second time and read everything differently than you did before you fully knew where the story was going. This is a film designed for that drop-in-the-lap feeling which certainly can be passed on by people showing the feature to others while you sit next to them watching their face change with the surprise.

That being said, Steven Knight did add that he does still hope that audiences give Serenity multiple viewings just not for the aforementioned typical reasons. Instead, his thinking was that he wanted to give the feature a certain timeless quality, meaning that those who see it in the future wont exactly be able to pin point exactly when it was made. He made the movie with the idea that it can exist as a movie completely independent of the world that is going on outside the room in which it is being screened (interestingly not too dissimilar to the life and actions of the kid who creates the game in which Baker Dill lives). Said Knight,

I hope it will be watched two or three times, and also I think I always like to try and do something that isn't part of whatever's happening right now in terms of film, so that if it's watched in 10 years time it won't be identifiable as a film that was made in 2018, 2019 - that it's not part of the current zeitgeist. So I do hope it will be watched that way.

Its an interesting perspective on the film, but also an accurate one. The main story isnt exactly one that is overly dependent on technology something that dates any film in the modern age and its almost entirely set in a location isolated from the rest of the world. Ignoring the ages of the actors, even watching the Serenity on the big screen today you could think that it is a feature from the 1990s that was brought back to theaters.

Those who want to see Serenity again, or, as mentioned, share the experience with a friend, have the chance to do so right now, with the movie still playing in theaters nationwide sporting a cast including not only Matthew McConaughey, but also Anne Hathaway, Jason Clarke, Djimon Hounsou, and Diane Lane. And to see what else will soon be coming to a theater near you, be sure to check out our 2019 Release Calendar.

Looks Like Thor's Scar Is On The Wrong Side Of His Face In Infinity War Poster

By  at Juni 07, 2023  , , ,  No comments
Looks Like Thor's Scar Is On The Wrong Side Of His Face In Infinity War Poster

Last year's Thor: Ragnarok took quite the toll on the God of Thunder. He lost his father and king, his home world and even his eye courtesy of Hela. The missing eye was sneakily hidden from the marketing for Ragnarok but the marketing for Avengers: Infinity War has shown that he didn't magically heal between films. Thor will enter the battle with Thanos down an eye, but a new poster for the film seems confused about which eye was actually wounded. You can see on the poster that although the eyepatch is on the correct eye (the right one), the accompanying scar is on the wrong side. Take a look.

So yeah, that seems to be a clear oversight and just adds another wound to poor Thor who may soon find himself an only child. In Ragnarok, the vicious Hela took Thor's right eye, which is where the eyepatch correctly is on this poster. But the scar that came from that wound is now over his left, undamaged eye. While the scar over a working eye look is very cool, very John Locke-esque, it is not correct. You can see on the screenshot below from the Infinity War trailer that Thor's left cheek is scar free.

I imagine that this happened because the artist was playing with placement and moving things around and just missed this little detail. That kind of thing can happen with these Photoshop-y posters. There were probably multiple people who double-checked this thing and simply became snowblind and didn't see it. And with so many characters on this poster to get right, this error fell through the cracks. It's not even the biggest mistake though; the creative team forgot to put Hawkeye in entirely! That said, this poster is still very cool and colorful and reminds us just how many different characters will be suiting up for the fight in this movie.

Although far from ideal, a mistake on a poster isn't a major issue and is easily remedied. If Thor had the scar and eyepatch over the wrong eye in the film, well, that would be very bad. Fortunately, Thor has already been seen plenty in the trailers for Infinity War and all seems to be in order. Whether Thor makes it out of the film alive and without some new wounds is another matter entirely. Judging by the trailers, he is not in for a good time. According to co-director Joe Russo, the God of Thunder will have some of the most screen time in the film and we think he is also one of the characters most likely to die.

You'll want both eyes open to experience the awesomeness when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27th. For all the latest in poster analysis and the proper placement of badass scars, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

It looks like the situation with Thor's eye going into Avengers: Infinity War may not be as clear-cut as previously assumed. What's Going On With That Thor's Eye In Avengers: Infinity War

One of Bell's photos, which features Thor, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Shuri (Letitia Wright), and Nebula (Karen Gillan), gives the best look at Thor and, if you look closely, you can see a scar running down the right side of his face. Supposedly, that's all that's left of Thor's run-in with Hela by the time Infinity War starts.

There's A Fanmade Hawkeye Infinity War Poster, Because Of Course

There's A Fanmade Hawkeye Infinity War Poster, Because Of Course

Another day, another superhero fan poster. This week, Marvel released some super cool images of the Avengers ahead of the big release of Avengers: Infinity War. Like the other marketing for the upcoming movie, Hawkeye and Ant-Man were missing. However, thanks to one very creative artist, if you've been wanting to see Hawkeye in all of this, you can check out the new fan art, below.

The art comes from BossLogic, who is all about giving fans tantalizing looks at potential castings and characters for quite some time now. The looks at Hawkeye, including this poster that totally matches in the series, are particularly compelling. People want to know what Hawkeye is up to during Avengers: Infinity War, and fan theories have indicated he is going to become Ronin. Case in point, this version of Hawkeye has him looking like Ronin, complete with a brand new look.

Of course, what this image depicts may not be where Avengers: Infinity War and the subsequent and still not fully titled Avengers 4 goes at all, but we have heard several things that help to indicate Ronin might be the path the movie takes. First and foremost, there have been hints parts of Avengers 4 may be set in Japan, and that Clint Barton may change personalities somewhat, following events that reportedly occur in Avengers: Infinity War. Although different Marvel characters have become Ronin in the comics, it seems as if Barton might be the one taking on the identity coming up in the MCU.

What's definitely true is that Hawkeye will be in a different position than the other Avengers in this movie. We've heard people involved with the movie talk a little bit about Hawkeye's situation moving forward. Following the events that happened in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo told CinemaBlend that Hawkeye will be "on his own journey" and he'll be "in a special spot" during the upcoming film.

It should be said that Jeremy Renner seems pretty into all of the fan depictions of him changing looks and characters. Although Marvel hasn't revealed anything spoiler-y, he's shared fan art and more depicting his character changing to become Ronin, so he at least thinks the idea is cool. In addition, although the art has avoided him, we know he was at least on set for the filming of Avengers 4, so he will factor in at some point. Luckily, we don't have too much longer to wait to see the direction Avengers: Infinity War is going in. The movie has landed an early release date on April 27. If you'd like to know more about what's coming, check out our full guide.
