The Little Stranger Has A Massive Clue To Its Big Mystery In The Middle Of The Film

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains massive spoilers for The Little Stranger. Read at your own risk.Red herrings are wonderful devices in mystery storytelling, and Lenny Abrahamson's The Little Stranger utilizes an impressive one. For almost the entire runtime it has you looking to the right, believing it to be the spirit of young Susan that is haunting Hundreds Hall, but right at the end you turn left and realize it's actually young Faraday. It's the kind of revelation that causes you to rethink everything that you just saw -- and this includes the little scribbles that are found carved into the woodwork. According to Abrahamson, you're meant to think that the little 'S's' stand for "Susan," but instead it is actually Faraday's first initial, which is only shown once, and in the middle of the movie:

In a film, it's hard to hide some things. You can hide things in different ways. But yes, we did put a little, you're right, there is an 'S' in front of Faraday's name, which is a little detail... and given the scribbles on the doorway, on the woodwork, the 'S' shapes. Whereas you never find out his name in the novel. In fact, nobody ever calls him that. Everybody calls him Faraday.

When you watch The Little Stranger a second time, it would be wise to pay attention to the names listed outside the office of the protagonist's practice, shown in the second act of the movie, as Faraday, played by Domhnall Gleeson, is listed as "S. Faraday" -- a detail ultimately linked to the movie's big mystery. Characters in the film only refer to him as Faraday or "the doctor," so the connection is never made explicit, but the character's mystery first name is meant to explain both the mysterious scribbles at Hundreds Hall and the ones found on the desk in his office.

Having spotted the initial during my screening of The Little Stranger, I confirmed the detail when I spoke with Lenny Abrahamson last month. He not only explained on the connection between Faraday and the scribbles, but also why elements like that made it so tricky to adapt the story from its source material: the novel of the same name by author Sarah Waters. In one medium the audience subsists only on the details the writer provides; while the latter offers up the chance for them to soak up every element. Said Abrahamson,

This is the great difference between film and books, right? You can be standing in a room in a book and not tell people the color of the wallpaper, the number of desks, the number of chairs, and you don't have to hear somebody when they're being introduced to somebody else, so you don't have to hear their first name. The author can tell you anything they want.

Still, it doesn't get more subtle than sneaking an "S" on to a name label, and it's definitely not until you get to the end of The Little Stranger that you fully understand its significance.

The movie is a wonderful slice of gothic horror featuring a number of stellar performances, and hopefully it will find a large audience. The Little Stranger is currently out in limited release -- and stay tuned here on CinemaBlend for more from my interview with Lenny Abrahamson.

Why I'm Excited For Disney+

Why I'm Excited For Disney+

At The Walt Disney Companys Investor Day presentation last week, the Mouse House finally revealed what it has in store for its upcoming Disney+ streaming service, and it is a lot. Disney is coming out guns blazing with a slew of content and an aggressive price point that make Disney+ a compelling value proposition for consumers in a crowded streaming field.

Theres a lot to be excited about when the service debuts this November, from the first ever live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian to all the MCU series to the Imagineering documentary series. And Im hopeful that classic Disney catalog animated series like Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Gargoyles and Recess will finally be available in their entirety on Disney+.

All the TV coming to Disney+ is great, but Im also really excited for the potential benefits this new platform offers on the movies front. Read on to see why.

The MCU And Star Wars All In One PlaceThe Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars are the two most successful franchises ever, and eventually they will both be viewable in their entirety on Disney+. These franchises both have a high re-watchability factor, and if youre a fan of either of them, having guaranteed access to them anytime on Disney+ is an enticing prospect.

Once Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out, youll be able to binge all nine films in the Skywalker Saga in one place. Consider the current situation with Avengers: Endgame as well. Many Marvel fans want to re-watch some of the previous MCU movies before The Infinity Saga comes to a close, but currently you cant do that on streaming, even across multiple services. You would have to own physical copies or pay rental fees. Even as an advocate of physical media, I find this appealing, especially since Disney+ will support 4K and HDR, so I wont need to upgrade nearly two dozen movies to get great quality.

New And Original MoviesDisney has found a lot of success theatrically thanks to its massive brands and recognizable IPs. The studio makes the most successful and popular blockbusters in the industry, but thats basically all it makes. There is a sameness and safety to Disneys theatrical strategy of rotating tentpoles from established properties that is wildly lucrative, but predictable. The Disney+ platform provides the company a way to do something different, as Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Productions President Sean Bailey said at the Investor presentation:

Disney+ affords us the opportunity to tell more stories from a variety of genres. We will always remain true to the values of what a Disney live-action film offers, but were able to take some risks, which is really exciting. While theatrical box office right now is being driven by giant blockbuster events, there are amazing stories and characters that are yearning to be enjoyed by the whole family.

For a studio sometimes criticized for only making blockbusters, this is exciting. Already Disney+ has the holiday comedy Noelle starring Anna Kendrick, the coming-of-age novel adaptation Stargirl and the kid caper Timmy Failure, to name a few. Its awesome to see Disney branching out, taking risks and allowing for more creative freedom by telling different kinds of stories than it does on the big screen. Sean Bailey also indicated that the same love and care will be given to these Disney+ movies as the companys theatrical titles, and thats exciting.

Remakes Of Less Popular Disney Animated MoviesThere is an argument to be made that Disney is going for cheap nostalgia dollars by remaking its animated classics in live-action, but people love them and they are largely successful. Yet as Dumbo recently showed, not all of the studios animated classics are really built to be box office smashes. But that doesnt mean they dont deserve a solid live-action remake, and Disney+ provides a place for a smaller-budgeted remake to land.

One of the launch titles for Disney+ is a live-action reimagining of Lady and the Tramp starring the voices of Justin Theroux and Tessa Thompson. Theres also a remake in the works of The Sword in the Stone. Disney may run out of titles popular enough to be big screen blockbusters, but its catalog is extensive and has many films that could find new life in remakes on Disney+. Wed love to see Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet get some love too, but those two might require big screen budgets. The Black Cauldron maybe?

Live-Action Sequels And Reboots Could Have A Chance On Disney+This isnt so much a promise of Disney+, but a hope for the nascent streaming service. Disney has a long history full of great and beloved titles beyond its revered animated movies. Disney hasnt indicated as such, but it seems like an ideal place for reboots and sequels of the studios live-action properties that no longer fit within its big-screen strategy. Or more specifically, the long awaited, frequently-asked-for National Treasure 3.

Bob Iger hasnt doused hopes for National Treasure 3, and if finding a place for it on Disneys crowded theatrical calendar was a problem, that obstacle could be removed if it releases on Disney+ instead. The hope for National Treasure 3 isnt the only exciting possibility though. A reboot of The Rocketeer was in the works, and while we havent heard much about it recently, that too may be have a better chance to soar on Disney+. And that reported TV movie reboot of Hocus Pocus should really be a proper sequel dropping on Disney+ next Halloween.

No More VaultHas there ever been a more brilliant and infuriating invention than the Disney Vault? Disneys strategy of only making its animated movies available on home video for a limited time to create demand and make each re-release an event has long frustrated fans of the studios classic films. Disney has even employed this tactic in the streaming and digital realms; with the Aladdin remake on its way, the 1992 original is unavailable for streaming or digital purchase.

Like Robin Hood stealing from Prince John, Disney+ is busting that vault wide open and raiding it for subscribers. The vault program will not apply on the service and Disney+ will be the one-stop shop for fans of Disneys animated classics. That means no more searching stores or different streaming services in vain when the mood strikes you to watch one of your childhood favorites. That convenience is awesome and as someone who grew up with Disneys animated movies, it will be nice to know I can watch them all in one place.

It is still early and Disney+ hasnt even launched yet, but it already has a lot going for it. The potential for Disney+ to reward Disney fans by offering both beloved existing films and unique new movies is immediately evident and exciting.

Disney+ launches in the United States on November 12 with a monthly rate of $6.99 or an upfront yearly price of $69.99. Well keep you updated on all the latest news on Disney+ as it arrives.

First Avengers 4 Trailer Isn't Too Far Away

By  at Juni 02, 2023  , , ,  No comments
First Avengers 4 Trailer Isn't Too Far Away

In just six months Avengers 4, which still doesn't have a actual title trailer or synopsis, will arrive in theaters. This is uncharted territory for a Marvel film, in regards to marketing. The studio usually amps their upcoming superhero films well ahead of release dates -- Infinity War for example had its first teaser premiere at D23 Expo, almost a full year ahead of its release. At this point, fans have been at the edge of their seats waiting, wondering if Marvel would even drop an Avengers 4 trailer before the film at all. We do finally have an answer to if and when the Avengers 4 trailer will drop, thanks to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Yesterday Feige revealed that we'll be getting a trailer sometime before the end of the year.

After months of radio silence, we finally have a rough ETA for the Avengers 4 trailer, thanks to Los Angeles-based journalist, Erick Weber. Before attending a special screening and reception for Black Panther, Weber took to Twitter to ask fans for their burning questions concerning Avengers 4 and Marvel and didn't come back empty-handed. He tweeted out the news that that Kevin Feige said the trailer would premiere before the end of 2018, who was an attendee at the screening.

This means we should expect the trailer any day from now until the new year, so let the impatient social media refresh begin. While Avengers 4 was originally shot back to back with Infinity War, reshoots just wrapped for the production, so the Russo Brothers might want a little time to toy with the rest of the footage before putting any of it out -- so we should be patient.

The holiday season is coming around the corner, and Disney has two big releases on the docket around that time, so they could be waiting for the release of either Ralph Breaks the Internet coming out on Thanksgiving weekend or Mary Poppins Returns, which is taking the Star Wars franchise's typical week-before Christmas spot. Next week's release of Nutcracker and the Four Realms is also a possibility, but not as likely.

The Avengers 4 trailer will likely find its way first on the internet, but premiering a huge trailer such as this one next to another Disney release will drum up additional hype and get people talking about all the way until it's late-Spring release date. Although, after the huge success of Avengers: Infinity War and that cliffhanger ending, anticipation is already way high. The audience is already there and most people don't need to be sold on it, they're going to buy a ticket either way.

Even when we do get a trailer, considering how especially high-stakes and underwraps a release like Avengers 4 is, I'm betting it will offer more shocks and hype to accompany the ending of Infinity War. This is the kind of rare release where Marvel really has us reeled in so they have room to play with our minds and really tease what will happen next when the movie comes out on May 3, 2019.

Avengers: Infinity War has a release date of May 4, 2018 which isn't too far away and will see most of our beloved MCU characters duking it out. The story is so epic, it'll culminate in the second

Tag Reviews Are In, Heres What The Critics Think

Movies being based on true stories are hardly infrequent in Hollywood, but every now and then a movie comes along where you wonder "Wait, something like this actually happened in real life?!" Tag is such an example, with the comedy starring Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, Hannibal Buress and Isla Fisher, among others, following a group of friends who have been playing the same game of tag for 30 years. Finally hitting theaters nationwide tomorrow, the first Tag reviews have started pouring in. Starting off, CinemaBlend's own Mike Reyes gave Tag three out of five stars in his review, saying that although the movie was uneven, the cast "injects a huge shot of life" into the proceedings.

Despite its messy execution, Tag is still full of slick performances and a streak of impish glee running through its various set pieces, which draws its failings in even sharper contrast than a more middling film of its ilk.

Richard Roeper from The Chicago Sun-Times wasn't nearly as kind to Tag, giving the movie only 1.5 stars out of five and declaring that the real life story about these tag enthusiasts was way too thin a premise to make for an entertaining movie.

We're not even halfway through 2018, but when it comes time to compile my list of the worst movies of the year, I have a strong sense there will be a moment when I'll be saying to Tag: you're it.

Moving back to more positive territory, The A.V. Club's A.A. Dowd gave Tag a B-, commending the performances, even if the content itself wasn't exceptional.

There's something mildly depressing about viewing petty gamesmanship as the engine that fuels and sustains male friendship. But funny is funny, and Tag gets by, appropriately enough, on the personalities of its stars...

Variety's Peter Debruge was also nicer to Tag, saying that while the movie certainly gets ridiculous at times, it deliveries a surprisingly "poignant" statement on friendship.

Tag leaves audiences energized and, dare I say, inspired, having delivered all that outrageousness... in service of what ultimately amounts to a sincere celebration of lasting human connections.

Jon Frosch from The Hollywood Reporter felt directly in the middle with Tag, noting that there are "worse ways to kill a couple of hours," but that the movie has problems with dialogue and maintaining momentum (though he mused that if might have worked better as a "really good, twisted psychological thriller").

Tag is neither bad nor good, but rather, despite its out-there story, almost numbingly ordinary: an easy, breezy action-com that's sometimes amusing but rarely funny, competent rather than inspired.

Finally, IGN's Simon Thompson awarded Tag an 8 out of 10 score, admitting that while some of the tag action sequences lost their impact because they were shown in the trailer(s), the movie's script is still on point.

Tag isn't a comedy classic but it's certainly entertaining and delivers what it promises along with a few welcome surprises. As a whole, it's never anything less than entertaining with some nicely twisted touches.

There are just a sampling of the Tag reviews now available, but overall, it sounds like the movie rests solidly in mixed reception territory. You can judge Tag for yourself when it runs into theaters tomorrow, though many of you will likely be able to catch it tonight in preview screenings. For all the latest in movie news, stay tuned to CinemaBlend, and don't forget to look through our 2018 release schedule to learn what cinematic offerings arrive later this year.
