The Room's Tommy Wiseau Wants To Clarify A Few Things About The Cult Favorite

To say that The Room is a movie surrounded by urban legends is a bit of an understatement. The film is shrouded in mystery thanks to its infamous behind-the-scenes shenanigans and on-the-screen ridiculousness. This is all in no small part thanks to the self-styled mystery of Tommy Wiseau, the writer, director, actor, and producer of The Room. People have questions about the project, some of which were the focus of The Disaster Artist. One rumor indicates the movie had no script, and Tommy Wiseau is a little sick of that one. As he recently said,

I'm myself. You know I correct some of the statements online on this garbage about the script did not exist on The Room, and it happened by accident. But definitely, there's a different impact right now that The Room has worldwide.

15 years after the release of The Room, Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero are back with Best F(r)iends, a new movie that takes inspiration from their unlikely friendship. The two sat down for a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, but you can't talk to these two without bringing up The Room. When asked how their lives have changed since the release of the award-winning Disaster Artist, Wiseau simply stated that he was himself. However, he did add that he's always correcting rumors about The Room. One such rumor is that the movie didn't have a script and that it "happened by accident," which Wiseau disagrees with.

There's some debate as to how much of The Room, dubbed the Citizen Kane of Bad Movies, was on purpose. The charm of the movie is how seriously it takes itself, which only makes everything more ridiculous. That's why The Room has become so popular for midnight screenings, but according to Wiseau, the movie was always envisioned as a comedy. Whether that's true or not is anyone's guess, but Wiseau is sticking to his guns on this one.

Only time will tell if Best F(r)iends will get a similar cult status as The Room. The plot follows a homeless drifter in Los Angeles who begins working at a morgue, only to realize his boss (Tommy Wiseau) is hiding a mysterious past. The film is directed by Justin MacGregor and written by Greg Sestero. Volume One of the movie releases on digital and on-demand September 25.

One Star Wars: The Last Jedi Scene Mark Hamill Wishes Hadn't Been Cut

It's an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. With Disney now in charge of the beloved property, there is an abundance of new content being produced and released for its generations of fans. While Solo: A Star Wars Story is next up on the list, cinephiles are still reeling from the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Rian Johnson's subversive sequel challenged what we thought about the galaxy far, far away, and there were a ton of scenes left on the cutting room floor. One of them included Luke's emotional reaction to the news of Han Solo's death, and it turns out that Mark Hamill wishes that sequence made it into the film. He said,

Yes, of course because it shows Luke was putting on a facade in front of Rey and even Chewie, that he was embittered and sort of a broken man. And I think the fact that he could let his emotions out when he was by himself would have made an impact on the audience because it allowed them to grieve the loss of Han Solo just the way Luke felt it. But that always happens in films. You say, 'Oh, what about this scene where this happens or that happens?; because you want to give the fullest experience that you can. And like you say, it was brief enough that I was -- [chuckles] They had time for me to milk that big alien but to show any human emotion? Nah, we don't have time for that. But again it's not my call.

While there was plenty of great stuff that ended up cut from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, fans and actors alike seemed to miss Luke dealing with the news of his friend's death. The trio of heroes carried the original trilogy, and Han was obviously very close to Luke. Since Han's funeral wasn't included in The Last Jedi, it would have been a method for the character to be truly and collectively grieved. But ultimately the movie had to be cut down for runtime, and Luke's scene got the chop.

Mark Hamill's comments to IGN also point out that Rian Johnson and the director's had a job to do, and he understood that cuts had to be made in order for The Last Jedi to not run too long. It ultimately had a runtime of 152 minutes, which is no walk in the park all things considered. I'd argue it has enough to carry its runtime, but the myriad cuts made it possible.

It should be interesting to see where Solo: A Star Wars Story ultimately clocks in, since it no doubt has less dense material to cover. Much of the next standalone film's details are still very much a mystery, as the franchise keeps its cards close to the chest.

Glass Original Opening Scene Was Way More Chilled Out

Heres a new M. Night Shyamalan twist: the Glass director famous for his unexpected endings actually has an alternate opening hes revealed as it's released digitally today. The final film in the trilogy that began with 2000s Unbreakable and continued with 2016s Split was going to begin at the psychiatric facility that much of the film is set in.

The brief alternate opening (via Entertainment Weekly) has men on ladders installing cameras to the walls of Glass' main location before the eerie string music sets the scene for the movies and the opening titles roll. M. Night Shyamalan has explained why he originally thought this scene would open the movie thusly:

Structurally, what I wanted to do with the movie was to kind of say to the audience that the whole movie is going to take place in one location My original concept of how to set up that premise: the whole movie is going to take place in this one place, were going to come back here. So, I wanted to start in this mysterious place where they were setting up this ambiguous kind of rooms and things for we dont know what purpose.

This alternate scene certainly builds a bit of tension for the audience in the beginning of Glass, but it was decided that it wasnt particularly necessary to the film. Since many of us went into the movie knowing the facility was going to be a huge part of Glass storyline, Id say it was a good call. Directors such as M. Night Shyamalan have to make a ton of tough decisions when cutting together their movie, and this is an interesting one that certainly would have worked. However, heres why he decided against it:

Ultimately it didnt end up in that structure because there were too many beginnings and the beginning of the movie. What I did was move Patricia to the front, immediately start with her and pick up right after Split.

So instead of starting with the mysterious, Shyamalan went for the familiar. James McAvoys Split character was likely what many had most recently seen from the franchise, so it served as a great refresher to pick up with the story with Patricia, one of the Hordes identities. The director also said Glass already had too many beginnings, since it also needs to quickly fill a large gap of time between David Dunns role in the franchise, so taking this portion out likely served the movie well.

Shyamalan has said that Glass used to be way longer, with a runtime of three hours and 20 minutes before shaving it off to a more reasonable time of 2 hours and 9 minutes. The director certainly seems like he had a grand vision for the trilogy closer. Considering the overall positive reactions of fans (polarizing the brutal critical reviews) and its $246 million worldwide gross, things turned out great.

Glass is available on Digital HD today and will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD on April 16.
