Brie Larson hasn't even debuted as Captain Marvel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, but she is already championing the films of her fellow heroes. Earlier today the actress expressed her love for Ryan Coogler's Black Panther and the belief that everyone needs to see it, while also acknowledging the expense of going to the movies. In response to that, another person offered to buy a pair of tickets for someone else who couldn't afford it and things snowballed from there. Brie Larson retweeted the request and then encouraged fans willing to buy tickets for people to comment on her tweet.
She may not have Captain Marvel's superpowers, but Brie Larson is still doing what she can to help others. Thanks to her celebrity status, her social media reach is far greater than the average person's, so she is able to connect strangers from all over so that those willing can help those without means to see what she believes to be an important film. Initially, Brie Larson was just replying and retweeting the generous fans' offers, but I imagine that quickly became overwhelming and the actress probably had to go suit up with Captain Marvel now filming. So she posted a tweet for fans to comment on and connect with those in need of tickets. This movie was already going to do gangbusters, and now you have those who have already seen it ponying up the cash to pay for those who otherwise wouldn't. They're going to need more screens.
This pay-it-forward gesture is incredibly cool and generous in these troubled times. People helping out strangers is inspiring, and ironically, actually one of the more interesting philosophical debates explored in Black Panther. Now, of course, we live in an imperfect world full of imperfect people, so inevitably there will be those who attempt to take advantage of this. Those who can afford to see Black Panther, but like the idea of a stranger incurring that cost instead. In spite of this, the gesture of those who are making the sincere attempt to help others and bring joy into their lives remains pure and unblemished. You can't control what other people do with your generosity, you can only control whether or not you give it.
Brie Larson isn't the only one who believes in the importance of people seeing Black Panther either. A Harlem man raised money to send the 300 children of a Boys and Girls club to a theater to see the film. Oscar-nominated actress Octavia Spencer also wanted to ensure that young brown children got a chance to see themselves as a superhero by buying out a theater in Mississippi to hold special screenings of the film.
