Hugh Jackman Sent A Cute Message To School Kids Who Were Performing The Greatest Showman

Sometimes you can predict ahead of time if a movie is going to perform well in theaters, and other times there are movies that manage to completely surprise critically and/or commercially. One of the latter from last year's theatrical offerings was The Greatest Showman, which saw Hugh Jackman playing P.T. Barnum in a musical adaptation of Barnum forming his famed circus. In the six months since The Greatest Showman's release, it's built up an impressive fanbase, so much so that students at the Mitton Manor Primary School in Glasgow, Scotland recently performed some of the movie's tunes on stage, and Jackman sent a special message wishing them good luck.

Rather than perform the entire Greatest Showman story, the Mitton Manor students sang a few songs from the blockbuster musical, and according to BBC, there was an emphasis on "This is Me," arguably the biggest song from the movie. Ahead of the performance, the teachers decided to tweet Hugh Jackman to see if they could get his attention. Eventually they were successful, and while the actor was unable to see the children perform in person, he did shoot the above video to offer his support and give some valuable words of wisdom from The Greatest Showman. Judging by the accompanying response, it sounds like Jackman will get to see soon enough how the little ones did in front of their school assembly.

Having been in development for nearly a decade, The Greatest Showman finally opened to the masses last December, with Hugh Jackman's co-stars including Zac Efron, Zendaya, Michelle Williams and Rebecca Ferguson. While the movie earned a mixed critical reception, commercially it's performed excellently, making $433 million worldwide off an $84 million budget. The Greatest Showman subsequently earned numerous accolades, which included "This is Me" winning a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture and being nominated for an Academy Award. While such a movie isn't prime material for earning a sequel, there has been talk recently about the potential for The Greatest Showman becoming a Broadway musical. If that happens, given Jackman's stage background and assuming he doesn't have any movies to work on, I wouldn't be surprised if he reprised P.T. Barnum for some of the opening stage performances.

Hugh Jackman can next be seen U.S. Senator Gary Hart in The Front Runner, and he's also being eyed for a role in Bad Education. The following contains a major spoiler for Solo: A Star Wars Story. If you don't know, you really don't want to know this before you see the movie.

Solo: A Star Wars Story contains a major character reveal that took the audience by surprise. It turns out, we have Ron Howard to thank for seeing him return. Apparently, the exact identity of the power behind Crimson Dawn hadn't actually been decided when Ron Howard came on board as the director for the film. However, there was a list of potential candidates to play the big boss and Howard pushed hard to use the one that eventually showed up on screen. Here come the spoilers. According to Howard...

It just sort of said 'Boss.' And I thought when I came in, I assumed they knew who it was and they were just keeping it under wraps. And they didn't. But Maul was listed as one of the candidates. And I lobbied hard for that. I thought that made a lot of sense to me. I found that character to be really effective. And I knew for a fact, without asking directly and giving anything away, my son Reed who just turned 31, who's a dedicated Star Wars fan, he's a golfer. He's not in the business. Dedicated Star Wars fan. I just whispered that possibility and he just thought that would be incredibly cool. And so for that generation, I thought, well that was gonna be a pretty interesting idea. And doing a little more research and understanding sort of how the character had worked elsewhere, I thought it was good. And the Kasdan's were on board with that. And but then we actually shot it twice. Because we did it once. And then we realized we, it wasn't quite Maul enough yet.

Apparently, Ron Howard reveals to Slashfilm, the original version of the scene didn't include the lightsaber. The duel bladed weapon is Darth Maul's signature, as he was the first in the Star Wars universe to wield such a device. In this case, the hilt is a bit different than the version Maul used originally, looking much more menacing, so the reshoot was probably a good idea.

The most fascinating thing about the fact that Ron Howard had a hand in deciding that Darth Maul would be the one Dryden Vos was answering to, is that it means that the no decision had been made during the entire first half of filming when the movie was being helmed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It's true that the character doesn't have any direct influence on the film as a whole, so you don't need to know who the character will be until the time comes to film the scene, but it's certainly interesting that this piece of the movie had been left undecided.

While I'm curious who the other candidates were for the spot, Maul is a solid choice. The character has always been popular, even with him being so minimally used in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and while fans of the Star Wars animated shows have seen him before, Solo allows Maul to become part of the big screen canon once again.




Ron Howard was reluctant to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story at first, but he ultimately decided that he could help Lucasfilm out. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are perhaps mostly widely recognized for writing and directing The LEGO Movie, initially signed on with Lucasfilm to tell Han Solo's origin story on the big screen, based on a script from legendary Star Wars screenwriter Lawrence

Shazam! Director Has A Hilarious Response Over Calls For New Trailer

Shazam! director David F. Sandberg is keeping his film worthy of that exclamation point. He and star Zachary Levi have been busy engaging fans on social media -- kinda sorta answering questions on the film, but mostly just keeping the hype train chugging along. And they have clearly been having a blast in the process. Shazam! released a second teaser trailer about two weeks ago, after the first one came out last summer, but here's the great way Sandberg replied to a fan hoping for more footage:

They gave Shazam the Drew Barrymore Scream treatment! Not really, though. David F. Sandberg has been responding to fans who expected another trailer to drop last week. On a more serious note, he said he didn't know where that rumor came from, and he hated for fans to be disappointed, but he couldn't respond to every rumor out there. As he put it, the safest bet is to not believe anything that hasn't been officially announced.

David F. Sandberg is worth following on Twitter for his little fan polls alone. You may recall the light shade he threw at the MCU's Captain Marvel when tweeting the results of a fan poll that put Shazam! second to Avengers 4 on the list of most-anticipated superhero films for 2019 -- ahead of Captain Marvel. As he teased/reminded comic book readers, Shazam is #TheOriginalCaptainMarvel.

Zachary Levi -- who almost blew off his Shazam! audition, thinking it wouldn't go anywhere -- has also been having fun engaging with fans, and he even cried over some fan art he received during Brazil Comic Con.

Shazam! is technically connected to the DCEU, and Henry Cavill's Superman was supposed to cameo at one point, but it's mostly its own thing. It will be following the record-breaking success of Aquaman, and seems to have an even lighter tone and brighter visuals. We don't know yet how much money Shazam! will make at the box office, but hopefully it's enough to pay for all of those expensive suits.

The first Shazam! trailer came out during 2018 San Diego Comic-Con. Another trailer was shown at Brazil Comic-Con, but not all of that footage has been released to the public at this point. The second teaser aired as a TV spot earlier in January. We'll probably get more footage of some kind before the film's April release, but we don't know if that will come via an "official trailer" or quick TV spots, etc.

Keep up with our Shazam! updates and get ready to watch the film in theaters starting April 5. April is going to be a particularly big month for superhero movies, but all of 2019 is shaping up to be one for the books.
